Sciatica
If you’ve got pain running down the back of the leg- it’s very tempting to think that it’s nothing, that it will go away on its own.
There’s no obvious reason why it happened - but it doesn’t seem to be improving!
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg.
Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body. Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve.
This causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.
Although the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, most cases resolve with non-operative treatments in a few weeks.
People who have severe sciatica that's associated with significant leg weakness or bowel or bladder changes might be candidates for surgery.
If that’s happening to you, you’re not alone - and we hear this type of thing all the time.
In fact, Lower Back Pain and Sciatica is the most common problem that we see in our Physical Therapy clinic in Lakeway, Dripping Springs, and South Austin .
“Why is This Happening to Me?”...
Most people think that when they get Sciatic Pain, its just going to go away on it’s own.
That they’ll wake up one morning and like “magic”, it’ll be as if back pain and leg pain never happened… But then 6 months later you’re still living with back pain - often even worse than it was when it came on.
